XPE (Chemically Cross-linked Polyethylene) foam has revolutionized the artificial turf industry, serving as the high-performance "Shock Pad" layer. Its unique cellular structure provides the perfect balance between soft cushioning and firm support.
1. Primary Applications in Turf Systems
XPE foam is the preferred underlayment for sports fields (soccer, rugby, hockey) and premium landscaping due to its structural integrity.

Impact Protection & Safety: The primary role is shock absorption. It absorbs kinetic energy during falls, significantly reducing the G-max (impact severity) score of a field to protect athletes from concussions and joint injuries.

Performance Consistency: Unlike traditional infill (like rubber crumbs), XPE provides a uniform surface. It ensures consistent ball bounce and natural foot traction across the entire pitch.

Vertical & Horizontal Drainage: In outdoor installations, XPE pads act as a conduit for rainwater. By integrating drainage channels, it prevents waterlogging and allows the field to be used shortly after heavy rain.

Longevity Extension: By acting as a buffer between the turf backing and the hard sub-base (concrete or crushed stone), it reduces the friction and wear on the artificial grass, extending the system's lifespan by several years.
2. Advanced Processing Methods

Surface Embossing (Grooving):
The foam surface is often heat-pressed with patterns such as "S" shapes, diamonds, or grids. These grooves serve as horizontal drainage channels, allowing water to flow to the perimeter drains efficiently. -
Precision Perforation (Punching):
To ensure vertical permeability, the foam undergoes mechanical punching. Small holes are distributed across the sheet, allowing water to pass through the turf backing and the pad into the ground base. -
Thermal Lamination:
XPE can be laminated with a Geotextile non-woven fabric or a PE film on one or both sides. This increases the tensile strength, prevents the foam from stretching during installation, and adds an extra layer of protection against sharp debris in the sub-base. -
Skiving and Splitting:
Raw XPE buns are skived into precise thicknesses, typically ranging from 8mm to 20mm, depending on the specific sport's requirements and the desired level of "cushion" feel. -
Folding and Rolling:
For logistics efficiency, the foam is processed into continuous rolls or Z-fold (fan-fold) panels. Z-folding is particularly popular as it allows for rapid "unrolling" on-site, significantly reducing labor costs and installation time.
